I Sold My First Illustrator Script for $640 with Claude: Here Is How I Did It

I made $640 on Upwork with an Illustrator script built using Claude AI — StockWork cover

Overview

Laying out custom automation tools in Adobe Illustrator used to require deep programming knowledge in ExtendScript and JavaScript. However, leveraging modern AI models like Claude AI makes it possible to build, test, and package functional Illustrator scripts without writing code from scratch — and even monetize them on freelance platforms like Upwork. In this post, I break down how I earned $640 on Upwork by creating a custom vector automation script using Claude AI, how the workflow operates, and how you can apply the same strategy to build your own tools. Check out the complete video above to see the exact step-by-step process of setting up Claude AI, generating ExtendScript code, running it in Adobe Illustrator, and packaging custom scripts for clients.

My Experience: The $640 Order

In the video above, I show you the actual order on my screen: $640 for a single script project. A client approached me — I received an invitation, because I have optimized my profile in a specific way — and what they needed was not creative design work. They had hundreds of logos and wanted their workflow sped up: favicons, footers, and batch-processed logo files, all done in minutes instead of hours.

I built them three scripts. The first took their logos — 300 or 400 of them — and placed each one center-aligned onto a different artboard size, all in batches. The second generated black-and-white variants on an additional artboard. The third created the footers and favicons they needed. The client paid $640, left me an excellent five-star rating, and became a permanent client of mine.

Why Random Prompts Waste Your Time and Tokens

Random vs structured prompts for Claude AI: why random prompts waste time and tokens in Illustrator scripting

Randomly typing requests into AI often results in errors and wasted tokens. As I explain in the video, Claude works like an employee: if you must explain everything from A to Z every single time, it is slow and expensive. The fix is to set Claude up once — like an experienced employee who already knows your environment — so every new script comes out right with minimal back-and-forth. That setup has three parts: Projects, Custom Instructions, and Skills.

The Setup That Makes It Work

3-part Claude AI setup for Illustrator scripting: Claude Projects, Custom Instructions, and Skills

Claude Projects

Start a new Project (e.g. "StockWork Script Generator") so Claude remembers your exact coding environment across every session. I keep Claude bookmarked because I use it constantly, and I run three projects: the StockWork Script Generator, an Etsy SEO listing generator, and a "Personal Team Member" for my YouTube titles and tags.

Custom Instructions

Program Claude with your rules: enforce standard ES3 JavaScript syntax, prevent modern ES6 keywords Illustrator's ExtendScript engine does not support, build user-friendly dialog UI panels, and maintain your branding headers. I even had Claude draft the instruction text for me. One caution: my instructions carry my StockWork branding in the copyright header. Fine for personal use — but if you sell the scripts, remove my branding and use your own.

Skills

Skills make generators available with a single click. I keep several in my Claude settings — including the Stock Illustrator Script skill, which I created through a chat with Claude, saved as a file, and uploaded via the "upload skill" option. Once added, open your project, type a slash, select the skill, and whatever you ask for is generated to your spec.

The Workflow, Step by Step

8-step workflow to build and sell an Illustrator script with Claude AI

  1. Create a Dedicated Claude Project (e.g. StockWork Script Generator) so Claude remembers your coding environment across sessions.
  2. Add Custom Project Instructions — ES3 syntax, no unsupported ES6 keywords, dialog UI panels, branding headers.
  3. Attach Custom Scripting Skills — call generators with a slash command in a single click.
  4. Identify Client Pain Points — target Upwork clients needing batch operations, like centering 300+ logos on custom artboards or exporting batch previews.
  5. Select Your Claude Skill — open your project, type a slash, pick the Illustrator Script Skill.
  6. Prompt in Plain English — e.g. "Create a script that prompts for an input folder of .AI files, converts them to JPEGs, and saves them to an output folder".
  7. Download the .JSX File — straight from Claude's artifact panel, no manual code copying.
  8. Execute & Deliver — test in Illustrator via File > Scripts > Other Script…, verify the batch export, package it for the client.

Live Demo: The SW JPEG Batch Exporter

In the video I demonstrate it end to end. I had a folder named "inbox" full of .AI files and asked Claude — project, instructions, and skill all active — for a JPEG batch-export script. It built the "SW JPEG Batch Exporter" and handed me the actual .jsx file. I downloaded it, opened Illustrator, and applied it with a drag and drop. It asked for input and output folders, and on clicking Export it converted 10 files in one go. The client version handled 100 to 200 files — JPEG previews for approval, done in a single click instead of one by one.

Why This Pays: The Freelance Angle

Why selling Claude AI-built Illustrator scripts on Upwork pays: three freelance benefits

  • Zero Coding Background Needed. No computer science degree required — just a clear understanding of graphic design steps, described precisely in plain language.
  • High-Value Upwork Gigs. Automation scripts save clients hours of manual effort, making them willing to pay premium rates — my $640 order is proof.
  • Reusable Assets. Once you create a script for one workflow, reuse or adapt it for future client projects and digital storefronts.

Tips for Reliable Results

  • Be specific in your first prompt. Describe what gets selected, what changes, and what the end result looks like. Vague requests produce broken scripts.
  • Test on a sample file first. Never run a fresh script on a production file — verify on a copy, then deliver.
  • Describe bugs precisely. Tell Claude exactly what happened versus what you expected, and paste the exact error text — that gives the AI far more to work with than "it didn't work."

Conclusion

The $640 order proves the model: clients pay premium rates for automation that saves them hours, and you don't need a coding background to deliver it — just precise plain-language prompts. Set Claude up once with a dedicated project, custom instructions, and skills, and every script after that gets faster and cheaper to produce. Describe the task clearly, test on a copy first, and turn one client's repetitive workflow into a reusable asset you can sell again.

FAQ

Do I need to know coding?

No. I built these scripts without knowing how to code myself — you describe the design task in plain language and Claude writes the ExtendScript.

Can I sell scripts I make with Claude?

Yes. Just make the branding yours: remove the StockWork branding from the copyright header and use your own before selling.

What if Claude's script has errors?

Normal on a first draft. Good project instructions prevent most repeat mistakes; for the rest, describe exactly what went wrong with the error text and iterate. Test on a sample file first.
